Male grew up in the neighborhood of San Pedro Totoltepec in Toluca, Mexico. She has been a football fan since childhood. Male first met members of the Mala Fama (a faction of "La Banda de Rojo" of Toluca F.C.) at the age of 15 when she helped the nuns sell sweets to raise money for church in the neighborhood square.
At my first meeting with Male, she spoke about her experiences as part of the Mala Fama and in a society characterised by machismo, in which women are often seen as "companions" of men rather than football fans.
